How to Refresh Your Social Media Presence for 2025

As a small business owner and entrepreneur, January has always felt like a fresh start for me. It’s the perfect time to pause, take a deep breath, and shift focus from working in your business to working on it.

This reset allows me to tackle the updates to all my platforms I’ve been putting off, fix issues I just couldn’t find time to tackle, and implement new strategies that can set my business up for success in the new year.

I’ve noticed many business owners jump headfirst into the new year with full force. Honestly, I’ve done it too. But this year feels different. The digital landscape is evolving—AI tools are transforming the way we work, and social media trends continue to shift.

For me, it’s time to catch up, rethink strategies and make sure my online presence reflects my business for the year ahead. And if you’re feeling the same, I’d love for you to come along and update your business too!

Why Refresh Your Online Presence Now?

Your social media profiles and digital footprint are often the first points of contact potential clients have with your brand.

Have you ever googled yourself? Looked at your social media profiles from an outsider's perspective? Visited your website as if you were a potential customer? If not, now’s the perfect time.

A polished, up-to-date profile creates a strong first impression and builds trust with your audience. People are more likely to follow, engage, and eventually buy from businesses that present themselves clearly and professionally.

Here Are My Favorite Ways to Refresh My Business and Digital Presence for the New Year

1. A Tidy Desk Equals a Tidy Mind, Setting the Stage for a Fresh Start.

A clean workspace helps clear your mind and boosts productivity. Start with your desk—organize your files, clear the clutter, and get rid of items you no longer need. A tidy space can help you focus better.

2. Make a To-Do List (Or Several!)

To-do lists are my life! Create separate lists for your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Prioritize them so you know what needs attention right away and what can wait.📝

There’s something incredibly satisfying about crossing things off your list, and it’ll help you stay focused.

3. Ease Back Into Your Routine

Don’t dive in headfirst. Just because you’re well-rested—or not well-rested from the holidays, hello fellow parents!—doesn’t mean you need to operate at full speed immediately.

Start with something that brings you joy—a favourite coffee, a short walk, or even a few minutes with a good book, a podcast or a personal development audiobook. It’ll help ease you back into your work rhythm without overwhelming yourself.

4. Tame Your Inbox

That inbox might be overflowing after the holidays, but don’t let it get the best of you. 📧📧📧

Start with a little organization. Delete what you don’t need, categorize the important stuff, and add any action items to your to-do list. Taking time to sort through everything first can save you a lot of stress later.

Optimize Your Social Media

5. Update Your Social Media Platforms

Once your social media profiles are set up, they need to be updated regularly to stay relevant. If you’re like me, you might be thinking ‘Um, was last January the last time I updated some of these?!’

It’s the perfect time to update bios and photos, add any new services or awards/milestones from the previous year and ensure your links are working (and relevant, too.)

Here’s what my checklist is looking like:

Instagram:

  • Update my written bio to reflect current offerings.

  • Check my link-in-bio app to make sure it’s updated.

  • Refresh my highlight icons and add any stories that fit.

  • Scan my feed and archive any out-of-date offerings.

  • Make sure any contests are closed by adding ‘contest closed’ to the caption.

  • Update my profile picture to replace old photos with fresh ones.

Facebook:

  • Update my about section.

  • Make sure Links are up-to-date.

  • Update my cover photo and profile photo.

  • Close any irrelevant groups.

LinkedIn:

  • Update my header image and profile picture.

  • Update my headline to make sure it shows what I do right now.

  • Make sure all links are working.

  • Check featured article sections for out-of-date content.

Threads:

  • I’m pretty new to this platform so it’s already up-to-date, but you could update your profile image and bio here as well.

Pinterest:

  • You guessed it, updating bio and profile photo.

  • Updating all pins for my lead magnets to keep them fresh.

Personally, I’ve removed Twitter from my strategy and my website as I won’t be moving forward with the app.

For any other platforms on your list, make sure to take a look at them and update what you can.

6. Audit Your Google My Business Profile

Often overlooked, take a second to update your Google My Business Profile!

While technically not a social media platform, it’s often the first thing people come across when they’re looking for services in your industry so make sure you update your business hours, add fresh photos and reply to any customer reviews or questions.

7. Perform a Content Audit

Grab your fave bevvy and take a scroll through last year’s content. What got people double-tapping, sharing, or commenting “OMG, I need this”? And what fell flat (we all have a few of those—no shame!).

Use those insights to fine-tune your 2025 content strategy. If your audience loved your behind-the-scenes bloopers or couldn’t get enough of your tips, give them more of what they want!

8. Create a New Social Media Content Calendar

Break out the calendar (or that pretty planner you swore you’d use this year) and start mapping!

Think about the key dates, campaigns, and themes that align with your big 2025 goals. Is Valentine’s Day the perfect time to showcase your love for your clients? Or maybe summer’s all about sun-soaked selfies and seasonal specials.

Whatever it is, get those ideas down now so you’re not scrambling later. Bonus points if you color-code it—because who doesn’t love a little rainbow on their to-do list? 🌈

Also, if coming up with fresh ideas for each month is a sticking point, you’re going to want to be on my newsletter for a new project I’m working on to deliver fresh ideas monthly, just for being subscribed!

9. Declutter Your Digital Junk Drawer

Time for a digital cleanup! Dive into your photos, videos, and graphics—yes, even those random Canva designs from three launches ago—and sort them into clearly labeled folders.

If it’s outdated, irrelevant, or just plain cringey, hit delete with zero regrets.

Organize what’s left so you can actually find your content when you need it. Trust me, future you will thank you when you're not digging through a Canva black hole looking for that one graphic from six months ago!

10. Hashtag Glow-Up Time

Trends change faster than you can say #ThrowbackThursday! Take a few minutes to research fresh, relevant hashtags for your industry—because #blessed isn’t cutting it anymore.

Swap out the outdated tags for ones your ideal audience is actually searching for.

Pro tip: Mix trending hashtags with evergreen ones so your content gets both short-term buzz and long-term visibility. Your posts deserve to be seen! 🚀

Bonus Tip: Celebrate Your Wins

Share your milestones and achievements from 2024! Highlighting successes builds credibility and strengthens your connection with your audience.
